Tips to Stay Fit on the Road

11/21/2017

The trucking industry is booming throughout the country. With a growing number of truck driving jobs in the Midwest, many are flocking to the region to embark on a career on the road. However, since the job is mostly sedentary and requires long hours of focus and concentration, staying healthy can be a bit of a challenge.

If you’re a current or aspiring truck driver, check out these tips to stay active on the road from Transport Distribution Co., known for the best truck driving jobs in Joplin, MO.
  • Get at least 7 hours of sleep a day: Find a dark and quiet place where you can rest uninterrupted. Having enough sleep is crucial. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has reported that drivers who fall asleep are responsible for approximately 1 in 5 deaths on the road.
  • Eat a balanced breakfast every morning: Breakfast provides you with the energy you need to start the day. A balanced breakfast also aids in prolonging your body’s need to eat lunch.
  • Exercise for at least 15 minutes and make sure to eat afterward.
  • Stay hydrated: Water is essential to the body and can affect your alertness on the road. It’s recommended that you intake at least 64 ounces of water a day (or two 8 ounce glasses).
  • Eat healthy snacks to reduce hunger and meal portions: Dark chocolate, dried fruit, and yogurt, for example, are all healthy and easily accessible on the go snacks.
  • Add more leafy greens to your diet: A good source of Vitamin K, leafy greens and salads help to conserve vision and lower cholesterol.
  • Cut Out Fast Food.
  • Limit yourself to no more than two cups of coffee a day: While coffee may keep you awake, too much caffeine can cause restlessness and inability to sleep.
  • Keep track of your diet and fitness: The best way to keep your momentum going and to identify areas that need strengthening is to log your eating and exercise habits daily.
